Lot Essay

Eurich's fascination with the action of water and waves stemmed from the time he spent sailing with his cousins in Weymouth, close to Chesil beach. Whilst he never learnt to swim, he described in his diary how he would concentrate his eye on one drop of water and try to follow it through to the crashing of a wave. A frequent visitor to the beach in any weather, he would sketch with his book anchored with heavy stones on the beach, working until his glasses became encrusted with salt. His visual memory would inform his practice many years later as he drew on imagery gleaned from these early sketchbooks.

We are very grateful to Christine Clearkin for her assistance in preparing this catalogue entry and to Philippa Bambach for the catalogue note.
