Gertrude Gumps opened her eponymous store, Gump's in 1861 as the California Gold Rush was in full boom. As San Francisco prospered, the store expanded to include a variety of homewares. Over the past 160 years, the family-run business continued to diversify and invite local artists to exhibit their designs, such as Norman Grag Studios.
A third-generation family business, Norman Grag Studios was founded by Hans Grag in 1927. Grag emigrated initially to Chicago from Germany, before ultimately settling in Northern California where his son Norman Grag continued the family tradition.
