Lot Essay

The present lot is an extraordinary example of lighting by Tiffany Studios formerly in the collection of Marcello Mastroianni (1924-1996), renown Italian film actor of the 20th century.

Born in 1924 at Fontana Lire, a small town of central Italy about 50 miles south of Rome, Mastroianni became a silver-screen sensation during the Italian ‘Golden Age’ of cinema (40s-50s). He eventually worked alongside another Italian cinema giant, director Federico Fellini, and it was Mastroianni’s leading roles in Fellini’s La Dolce Vita (1960) and the Academy Award winning 8 ½ (1963) that catapulted Mastroianni to international acclaim. His career spanned from 1939-1996, during which Mastroianni appeared in over 120 films. Fluent in Italian, French, and English, Mastroianni maintained homes in his beloved Rome, but also Paris.
