Lot Essay
The present lot is an extraordinary example of lighting by Tiffany Studios formerly in the collection of Marcello Mastroianni (1924-1996), renown Italian film actor of the 20th century.
Born in 1924 at Fontana Lire, a small town of central Italy about 50 miles south of Rome, Mastroianni became a silver-screen sensation during the Italian ‘Golden Age’ of cinema (40s-50s). He eventually worked alongside another Italian cinema giant, director Federico Fellini, and it was Mastroianni’s leading roles in Fellini’s La Dolce Vita (1960) and the Academy Award winning 8 ½ (1963) that catapulted Mastroianni to international acclaim. His career spanned from 1939-1996, during which Mastroianni appeared in over 120 films. Fluent in Italian, French, and English, Mastroianni maintained homes in his beloved Rome, but also Paris.

Overall good condition consistent with age and gentle use. The glass shade presents with gradient emerald green to white leaves, navy blue sky, and tan, white, and light green petaled flowers. When illuminated, the shade presents with vibrant light orange, beige and light green petaled flowers with emerald green leaves set against a light blue sky. Please note the blue colors in the shade are less saturated in hue than originally published. Please contact the department for further images. The glass used is period glass selected by Tiffany Studios. Approximately four glass tiles with cracks. Some tiles with light surface scratches and dirt to recessed areas.
The 'Twisted Vine' base presents with its apparently original chocolate brown patina with green undertones. The base with light surface scratches, dirt to recessed areas and scattered areas of light oxidation. Base with three light cluster with unmarked replaced paddle switches and replaced sockets. The wheel and heat cap appear to be original. The riser, which cannot be disassembled, appears to be replaced. The riser with an uneven surface which subsequently makes the shade rest slightly uneven.
Please note that although the lamp appears to be in working condition, Christie’s does not guarantee the functionality of the electrical components.
