Lot Essay

Writing in 1993, "The art of a chair is not its resemblance to art, but is partly its reasonableness, usefulness and scale as a chair," Judd carefully distinguished his fine art practice from his furniture design. He considered the function of an object foremost and did not seek to create useless yet beautiful works. However, the present lot reveals that while functional, Judd created simple and elegant furniture. The use of lines to create boxes and planes allows viewers of the Desk and "Side Shelf" Chairs to admire the attractive play of negative space, light, and shadow.
