Lot Essay

Venetian glass boasts centuries of exceptional and enduring glassmaking. The early twentieth century saw the formation of an avant-garde glassworks group named Fucina degli Angeli, with contributing members from John Cocteau to Pablo Picasso. The present lot presents a striking similarity to related works by members of the Fucina degli Angeli, such as Cocteau. His masterful designs are as whimsically playful as they are meticulously precise. Surreal and eye-catching, his pieces function equally well when placed side by side as they do isolated pieces. The craftsmanship and deft skill involved in these sculptures must not be overlooked, illustrative of the best that Venetian glass has to offer.
