Lot Essay

Austrian born designer Lucie Rie fled to England at the start of the Second World War, bringing with her essential tools, a few pots, and elements of her beloved interior, designed by Ernst Plischke. The open shelving designed by Plischke that lived in her English home and studio allowed Rie to proudly present her exploration of ceramics and the chemistry of glazes, which were on display for all visitors to her studio. The present lot and the following lot 76 were purchased during a studio visit in which Rie welcomed visitors into her home for tea and they left with beautiful souvenirs.
