The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas, stretcher and attachments appear to be in generally good condition. There is tape along the turnover edges that is lifting slightly in places. There is an inconsistency in the canvas weave to the left upper horizontal edge. There is some rubbing to the corners and extreme edges with associated minor paint losses in places. There are some further paint losses in places, the largest to the blue passage and to the headcover of the figure in the upper half of the composition. There are two flattened impasto peaks with associated pinpoint paint loss in the lower half of the composition. There are some fine hairline cracks in places to the thicker impasto. When examined under ultraviolet light, a second signature reading ‘Kayali 62’ is visible in the upper left quadrant, but there is no evidence of any retouching. Subject to the foregoing, it is our view that the work appears to be in generally good condition.
