Lot Essay

Untitled (2013) is a captivating work from Nabil Nahas’ renowned Fractal series, in which the artist masterfully combines acrylic paint with pumice to craft distinctively textured, sculptural surfaces. The vivid, immersive colours in this piece evoke the vibrant, intricate patterns of coral reefs in tropical seas, a metaphor for the dynamic and ever-evolving patterns found in nature. Through this series, Nahas explores the interplay of colour, form, and texture, creating works that are both visually striking and tactilely engaging.

One of Lebanon’s most celebrated contemporary artists, Nahas divides his time between Beirut and New York, where he earned his MFA from Yale University in 1973. His work draws inspiration from a wide range of influences, with a particular focus on the natural world—its colours, structures, and organic forms. At times, his work also reflects his interest in Islamic art, especially its abstract geometric patterns and rich chromatic qualities.

Nahas’ has been exhibited internationally, and his works are held in prestigious collections worldwide, including Tate, London; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Barjeel Art Foundation, Sharjah.
