Lot Essay

Karl Schmidt-Rottluff sent the present work as a postcard to Thekla Hess, wife of Alfred Hess, the Erfurt shoe manufacturer and patron of the Brücke artists. The letter on the reverse reads:

‘Dearest Frau Hess, is there a ray of hope? I have the feeling capitalism is in for violent Harakiri. Even though I am only a spectator, I can’t help thinking it is rather rash. How are you doing? The Hess company has introduced a second price range – certainly a smart move. We all but swam off these past few days [because of the rain] – simply crazy – but now there are mushrooms.
