Karl Schmidt-Rottluff sent the present work as a postcard to Thekla Hess, wife of Alfred Hess, the Erfurt shoe manufacturer and patron of the Brücke artists. The letter on the reverse reads:
‘Dearest Frau Hess, is there a ray of hope? I have the feeling capitalism is in for violent Harakiri. Even though I am only a spectator, I can’t help thinking it is rather rash. How are you doing? The Hess company has introduced a second price range – certainly a smart move. We all but swam off these past few days [because of the rain] – simply crazy – but now there are mushrooms. Best regards to Hans Hess, Yours S-R. With very best wishes too, yours Emy S-Rottluff.’

Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
Pastel and pen and brush and India ink on wove paper. Drum-mounted with Japan paper. The drum-mount hinged to the window mount at the left edge. The left sheet edge slightly uneven, consistent with stemming from the artist's sketchbook. The sheet undulates slightly due to the artist's technique. The extreme sheet edges with mount-staining. The reverse with a letter from the artist in pencil. Subject to the foregoing, it is our opinion that this work appears to be in generally good condition.
