Whistler crafted this etching while visiting a fellow student’s house in Saverne. The etching of a deserted street in the town is one of the most powerful works in the Twelve Etchings from Nature series. It shows a knowledge of etching, and is unique among Whistler’s prints in its suspense and mystery. -Exhibition Catalogue for An Exhibition of Etchings Dry Points & Lithographs by James McNeill Whistler P & D Colnaghi & Co.
