This large painting is executed on canvas and is reinforced by a glue lining. The canvas remains in good tension on its stretcher. The paint layer is stable under a slightly dirty and yellowed varnish. An uneven craquelure is visible across the surface. There is an area of additional cracking along the left edge, over the stretcher bar and the upper left corner in the red curtains. It appears the paint was lifting in these areas, although now secured, the surface has become uneven. There are a few unrestored losses around this cracking. There are a few visible tears in the canvas, the largest of which is visible in the background at left measures 15 3/4 inches. A diagonal tear in the sitters dress, just below her breast, measures 3 1/2 inches and small tear in the sitter's hair measures 4 inches and is visible in the catalogue image. The restorations to these tears, as well as a few other small tears, have discolored slightly with age. Additional discolored restorations are visible in the curtains and architecture in the background, the sitter's hands and arms, and to her blue cape. Further inspection under ultraviolet light is hindered by an opaque varnish. The painting can be hung in its present state, but could benefit from a light clean and refreshing the discolored restorations to taste. The painting is offered in a simple giltwood frame.
