Lot Essay

The inscription on the back of the present bronze can be translated as "Langtangpa," meaning the one from Langtang. Perhaps the most famous historical figure to sport the epithet Langtangpa is Geshe Langri Tangpa (1054-1123), also known as Langtangpa Dorje Senge, an important early Kadam master and a student of Potowa Rinchen Sal (1027-1105), himself one of the principle students of Dromtonpa (1004/5-1064).
