Lot Essay

The nature of the misunderstanding between the couple in the picture...is too serious and too private to speculate about. In any event it is not important whether their relationship was personal or commercial, or both. The photograph is about the bitter and desperate disappointment of private loss. Who else ever made a picture so full of wormwood? (John Szarkowski, Looking at Photographs, p. 110).

This work was printed in conjunction with the exhibition The Family of Man presented by The Museum of Modern Art in 1955.
