Details
This is a square partial slice of what is among the most alluring extraterrestrial substances known. One side is highly polished while the other side is etched. Some of the olivine crystals are iridescent. A highly unusual amount of peridot is suspended in the metallic matrix of this superior example.
80 x 80 x 3 mm. (3 x 3 x 0.1 in.)

95.6 g.

Pallasites are among the most aesthetically dazzling meteorites in the world and, much like Fukang (see lot 17), Esquel is among the most coveted. As Esquel’s crystals were not heavily shocked, the specimen showcases highly translucent forest-green to amber olivine crystals. This specimen also contains facet-grade olivine or peridot (semi-precious gem-quality olivine, the birthstone of August). Representing the mantle/core boundary of an asteroid that no longer exists, this partial slice embodies Esquel’s most alluring qualities. Indeed, small specimens of Esquel were the first pallasite chunks to be fashioned into modern jewelry.

Christie's would like to thank Dr. Alan E. Rubin at the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics, University of California, Los Angeles for his assistance in preparing this catalogue note.
