Lot Essay

The ten photographs show a range of areas of the surface of Mars to explore where the Viking Lander 1 and 2 would land, and subsequently did land, in 1976.

The first photo shows the debris kicked up by the Viking 1 Lander due to the impact of a protective cover ejected from the spacecraft. This was attached to a scoop at the end of the soil sampler arm and it dug into the Martian surface for the first time on July 28. On the surface, a variety of block sizes, shapes and tones are seen, and some rocks are partially buried.
