Lot Essay

[1] This photograph offers insight into the Apollo 12 mission where Astronaut Alan Bean removes the Apollo Lunar Surface Experiments Package (ALSEP) from the Lunar Module.

[2] “The crew erected the American flag after landing and collecting the contingency sample. The long shadow of the LM and the bleak lunar surface serve as a fitting backdrop” (NASA SP-235).
“You can see that I was holding the flag up,” pointed out Conrad. “Because, if you look at the rest of the pictures [of the mission], it hangs straight down, because the little pin up broke” (from the ALSJ mission transcript at 116:20:22 GET).

[3] The Apollo Saturn V space vehicle lifted off from launch complex 39A at 11:22 a.m. EST November 14, 1969, sending astronauts Charles Conrad, Jr., Richard F. Gordon and Alan L. Bean on the first leg of their lunar landing mission.

[4] The transporter carriers the 363-foot-high Apollo 12 Saturn V space vehicle from the Vehicle Assembly Building’s High Bay 3 at the start of the 3.5 mile rollout to Launch Complex 39A today. The transporter carried the 12.8 million pound load along the Crawlerway at speeds under one mile per hour. During Apollo 12, Commander Charles Conrad, Jr., and Lunar Module Pilot Alan L. Bean are to descend to the Moon’s surface while Command Module Pilot Richard F. Gordon pilots the command module in lunar orbit.
