Lot Essay

The Apollo 17 spacecraft, right, crosses paths with the S-1B booster that will help launch this Nation’s first Skylab astronauts into Earth orbit in 1973. The spacecraft, which houses the lunar module in the cone-shaped portion, was mated to a Saturn V launch vehicle in Vehicle Assembly Building’s high bay. The S-1B booster was erected on a mobile launcher in another high bay. The North American Rockwell Corporation built the Apollo spacecraft that will carry Apollo 17 astronauts Eugene A. Cernan, Ronald E. Evans and Harrison H. Schmitt to the Moon in December. The Chrysler Corporation builds the S-1B booster, which is being processed for the first time in the VAB.
