Only three minutes into the spacewalk, the fuel for his self-manoeuvring unit ran out. For the remaining minutes of the first American spacewalk, astronaut Ed White carefully manoeuvred himself by gently pulling at his 23-foot tether line. As McDivitt watched from the comparative safety of the capsule, he remarked "Ed, I ought to be getting some tremendous pictures of you".
