Lot Essay

Astronaut Joseph P. Allen IV, left, tethered to the orbiting Discovery, holds onto the Palapa B-2 satellite with his right hand while Astronaut Dale A. Gardner returns the used “stinger” device to its stowage area. Gardner has just removed the stinger, used for initially docking and stabilising the previously stranded spinning communications spacecraft, from the nozzle end. Gardner’s next duty was to deploy an adapter to the engine end for securing Palapa in the cargo bay for return to Earth.

From NASA caption.
