Lot Essay

Little Joe No.5 (spacecraft no.3) on the launch pad at Wallops Island, Virginia. The purpose of this test was to check the production spacecraft in an abort simulating the most severe conditions which might be expected in an Atlas launch. The spacecraft did not separate from the launch vehicle and the flight was unsuccessful. This test was conducted on November 8, 1960. On April 18, 1961 , Little Joe 5B was launched with the same test objectives and was completely successful, thus proving space flights of Project Mercury.

From NASA caption.
