Lot Essay

Mariner 6 – 35 (Far Encounter #35)
Distance from Mars: 537,000 Kilometers (333,700 statute miles).
Slightly above centre is one of the largest clearly defined craters in the far encounter series taken by Mariner 6. Made visible by a white rim and central spot, this crater measures some 300 miles in diameter and is larger than any crater found on the moon. The crater has been identified surprisingly as Nix Olympia, long familiar to astronomers as a feature which becomes progressively brighter through the Martian day.

From NASA caption.
