Lot Essay

The orbiter Discovery returns to KSC, gliding into the Shuttle Landing Facility on the back of the 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft. The landing brings full-circle a trip that began January 22, when Discovery lifted off on Mission STS-42 with a crew of seven and the International Microgravity Laboratory-1 on board. The flight lasted eight days. With the orbiter Columbia also ready to return to KSC from the Rockwell plant at Palmdale, California, Discovery was kept on the West Coast a week longer to bring Columbia back first.
