[SWIFT, Jonathan (1667-1745)]. Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World. In four parts. By Lemuel Gulliver. London: Benjamin Motte, 1726.

2 volumes, 8º. Engraved portrait frontispiece (second state) and 6 plates. (Vol. 1 damp affected and browned at upper margins, small repairs at upper margin of frontispiece, title and a few other leaves.) contemporary calf (rebacked with new labels, vol. 1 with new endpapers, corners rubbed).

Second edition (Teerink's AA edition), published mid November, quickly following the first edition on 28 October 1726. Swift's master-piece could be appreciated by old and young, the learned and the unlearned. Gay wrote: ‘From the highest to the lowest it is universally read, from the Cabinet-council to the Nursery’ ([7] Nov 1726, Correspondence, ed. Woolley. iii. 728). While it could be enjoyed on many levels, it was an unmistakeable political satire, the record of Swift's own experience of politics under Queen Anne. Teerink 290.
