Lot Essay

This diplomatic gift was displayed on a side table in Mrs Thatcher's private drawing room at No. 10 Downing Street. The inscription on the reverse of the charger reads 'Gifted to the British Prime Minister Mrs Margaret Thatcher From Zhao Ziyang, State Council Premier of the People's Republic of China December 1984 Carved by Ma Lin'. The image engraved to the centre is based on the Norman Parkinson photographic portrait of Mrs Thatcher, shot at No. 10 Downing street.
