The blotter gilt embossed to the front with the Houses of Parliament portcullis, with various notes to the interior in Margaret Thatcher's hand, including her signature; together with a silver letter opener with mark of James Samuel Bell and Louis Willmott, London, 1905 retailed by Mappin and Webb, engraved on one side '16th January 1980', the handle ajoure with the arms of the Worshipful Company of Grocers; a bound copy of the Official Report, Fifth Series, Parliamentary Debates, vol. 1000, with dedication 'Presented to/The Rt. Hon. Margaret Thatcher M.P., Prime Minister/by the/Editor and Staff of Hansard/on the occasion of the publication/of the 1000th Volume of the/Official Report/5th April 1982', together with slip case; a green enamel Waterman's fountain pen; three note cards, one printed with a signed photograph of Margaret Thatcher, another printed with a drawing of the entrance to 10 Downing Street, the third with the Houses of Parliament, several sheets of Priministerial letterhead writing paper and several sheets embossed with the Houses of Parliament portcullis and a menu cover printed with Mrs Thatcher's coat-of-arms, printed for Mrs Thatcher's 70th birthday party (unused)

Lot Essay

The desk blotter, almost certainly government issue, is likely to have been used by Margret Thatcher during her years at the Palace of Westminster. Subsequently, it was used daily in her study at her London home on Chester Square, where it was kept on her desk in her private study.
