Lot Essay
This handbag is perhaps the archetypal ‘Thatcher Handbag’. It is typical of the handbags favoured by Britain’s first female Prime Minister at the time when the verb ‘Handbagging’ was coined in the mid-1980s by Julian Critchley, Conservative MP, with reference to Margaret Thatcher’s dominant ministerial style, particularly during cabinet meetings. Mrs. Thatcher was photographed carrying bags of this type on many occasions. Post Lot Text This lot incorporates material from endangered species which could result in export restrictions. Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
Handles show no damage; There is very minor mark to top corner, but difficult to see. The interior shows minor scuffs consistent with very light use. Some dust in seams. Gilt hardware is unmarked and slightly tarnished. The zip to the pocket is stiff and of metal, so would probably benefit from a bit of lubrication.
Dustbag possibly associated; clean and undamaged
Box Very faded with tape markings, fading and dog-eared seams and corners. It has been left in the sunshine with another box on top so has a sun shadow of pale pink on the original Asprey's purple.
