The first ensemble is composed of a black silk velvet evening skirt, bodice and jacket trimmed with a satin ruffle; with a black silk chiffon gown woven with a lurex angular spider web, sleeveless, slightly trained, with ruffled underskirt; and another black taffeta evening gown of similar form with underskirts woven with a velvet squiggle

Lot Essay

Mrs Thatcher is photographed wearing the black velvet ensemble to the Lord Mayor's banquet, Mansion House, London, circa 1988. It is also probable that at least two of these outfits were worn for dinners on a visit to the White House at around the same time.
