Lot Notes

Katie Goodwin demonstrates in this work her fascination with film and her ongoing involvement with the history, archiving and production of the medium. Here she investigates the pioneering use of colour in one of the first general release Technicolor movies the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. It hardly seems believable that his enduring masterpiece made its debut as the second world war started. The film starts with the drab real world in black and white and suddenly converts to colour as Dorothy finds herself in the land of Oz. Goodwin's work celebrates that moment in cinematic history taking the original test reel given to projectionists who had never previously used colour film, and re-creating it as a sumptuous and vivid 6 colour silkscreen print.

Artist's Biography

Katie Goodwin (born Saint-Albans, 1979) completed her BA (Hons) Fine Art & Art History at Goldsmiths College, London (1998-2001); and her MA Fine Art (Distinction) at Wimbledon College of Art, London (2010-2011). Her works can be found in the V&A Permanent Print Collection, London; and the Creative Cities Collection, Beijing.
