This custom black and white Hi9 guitar featured in Urban’s music video for the 2018 hit single Coming Home alongside pop singer-songwriter Julia Michaels. The song was co-written with Urban, Nicolle Galyon, J.R. Rotem and Michaels herself who added the bridge and was the lead track on Urban’s album ‘Graffiti U’. Guitar riffs in the song were drawn from Merle Haggard’s “Mama Tried”, released in 1968, making this a country song referencing Urban’s dual appeal to traditional country music and pop fans alike. Urban’s long and decorated career as a musician has made him a 49 time nominee and 15 time winner of an Academy of Country Music award. Urban also played this same Hi9 guitar during the 2018 Academy of Country Music Awards show.
Hi9 guitars is a boutique luthier in Nashville, Tennessee whose ethos is to allow all aspects of their instruments to be customizable. The founder, Nick Drushel, says of the instruments “I want customers to put their own personality into these guitars, whether it be through sound or through visual art”. This guitar, made to Keith Urban’s specifications, is customized with a black ‘distressed’ fiber pick guard and back plate. With the inscription and peace sign in ‘grafitti’ by Urban for this sale, its unique design echoes the title of the album that inspired his Coming Home performances.
