Lot Essay
Scholar officials and the wealthy educated elite were traditionally interested in the intellectual pursuits of composing and reciting poetry, art collecting, painting and antiquarianism and they were often portrayed in Chinese painting engaged in these activities. Along with these intellectual pursuits, cultured hobbies included playing the qin, playing go, tea drinking, and drinking wine. This painting depicts scholars enjoying many of these favoured pastimes.

We have sought to record changes in the condition of this piece acquired after its initial manufacture. - The colours are bright.
- The scroll has a paper backing with some old tears, particularly to the edges, that have been reinforced with paper strips.
- There are a few scattered small black marks and a small white mark to the lower edge, the latter measuring approx. 1 x 0.5 cm.
- There is some creasing are some areas of light discolouration and a small area of water staining to the lower edge. - The handscroll lacks its' original mount.
