Lot Essay

The combination of the crane and pine, seen on the current jadeite snuff bottle, forms the rebus song ling he shou, which can be translated as 'live as long as pine and crane'. In traditional Chinese belief, the crane is thought to live for many centuries and is hence a fundamental symbol of longevity. This snuff bottle can therefore be seen as bringing good wishes to the owner to contemplate a long and happy life.
