Cora-Allan Wickliffe is a multi-disciplinary artist of Maori (Nga Puhi, Tainui) and Niuean descent. A contemporary practitioner of the Niuean tradition of barkcloth known as hiapo, she is credited with reviving the “sleeping artform” which has not been practised in Niue for several generations.

Her hiapo works deconstruct and reconstruct the decorative elements of the traditional form - delicate botanical drawings and abstract patterns - to create a contemporary interpretation. In creating the work, she draws freehand on the hiapo cloth, which she has made, using traditional pigments made from plants.

Wickliffe has a Masters in Visual Art and Design from AUT and although early in her career has attracted considerable attention. Her work has been written about in New Zealand’s leading art magazines and she has won several significant awards, residencies and grants. In 2021, she had artists residencies at Te Whare Hera Massey University Wellington, and the prestigious McCahon House, which said she was chosen for the way she “weaves together and embraces history, contemporary thought and personal exploration along with form, representation and symbolic imagery”. Also in 2021 she was the recipient of an Arts Foundation Springboard Award which came with mentoring by leading New Zealand artist Shane Cotton. In 2020, she won the Creative New Zealand Arts Pasifika Award. She has exhibited in New Zealand, Australia, Niue, England and Canada and her work is in public and private collections.

Elle s’est initiée au hiapo, la tradition niuéenne du tissu d’écorce, qu’elle revisite sous un angle contemporain pour ressusciter cet « art endormi » qui n’était plus pratiqué à Niue depuis plusieurs générations.

Ses œuvres sur hiapo déconstruisent et reconstruisent les éléments décoratifs traditionnels - délicats dessins botaniques et motifs abstraits - pour en proposer une interprétation contemporaine. Elle dessine à main levée avec des pigments traditionnels à base de plantes sur le tissu hiapo qu’elle produit elle-même.

Cora-Allan Wickliffe possède un master en arts visuels et en design de l’AUT, et bien qu’elle soit en début de carrière, son travail suscite déjà une attention considérable et de nombreux articles dans les plus grands magazines artistiques néo-zélandais. Elle a remporté plusieurs récompenses, résidences et bourses importants. En 2021, elle a été sélectionnée pour la résidence Te Whare Hera à l’université Massey de Wellington, ainsi qu’à la prestigieuse McCahon House, qui explique l’avoir choisie pour sa façon « d’associer l’histoire, la pensée contemporaine et l’exploration personnelle avec la forme, la représentation et l’imagerie symbolique ». Toujours en 2021, elle a reçu un Springboard Award de l’Arts Foundation grâce auquel elle a notamment bénéficié d’un mentorat avec le grand artiste néo-zélandais Shane Cotton. En 2020, Cora-Allan Wickliffe a remporté le prix Creative New Zealand Arts Pasifika. Elle a exposé en Nouvelle-Zélande, en Australie, au Niue, en Angleterre et au Canada. Ses œuvres ont été acquises par des collections privées et publiques.
