New Zealand sculptor Lyonel Grant is of Māori and Pakeha descent and was educated early in his career in traditional Māori carving. From 1975-1978 he was trained under master carver John Taiapa at the Maori Arts and Crafts Institute in Rotorua. After graduating with Honours and working for many years as Taiapa’s first assistant, he was approached to carve the marae (meeting house) Matapihi O Te Rangi in Tokoroa in 1984.
In 1987, Creative New Zealand funded Grant to attend a carving and sculpture symposium in Finland. There he was exposed to different methods and approaches by European artists, which resulted in a change of direction in his practice, with an increased emphasis on contemporary materials and techniques. Subsequently, he carved the contemporary marae Ihenga (1997) at the Waiariki Institute of Technology in Rotorua. For this project he combined non-traditional materials of laminate bronze moldings, ceramics, copper work and sculpted acrylic in addition to traditional Māori carving and weaving.
Between 1992 and 1998 Grant completed three major commissions for the Electricity Corporation of New Zealand. These sculptures encompass many of the essential ideas of his art practice, synthesizing Māori and European cultures, materials, and perspectives. The first commission Tu Te Rangi Haruru (1992) is a bronze and granite work of massive weight and dimensions. On one level it evokes the anchor stone of the ancestral waka from which the Arawa people are descended, with its gourd-like proportions suggesting prosperity. Equally its form evokes a water droplet -a universally accessible image- alluding to the power of modern hydroelectric dams and the harnessing of nature. The second commission, Te Ihingarangi (1992), is born of classical Māori imagery, with its elongated bronze form referencing the taurapa (canoe sternpost). The surface of this work, reminiscent of tattoos on the body or the patterning of cloth, functions like an historical storyboard encompassing colonial survey maps, renowned events from the past and treasured ancestors. Te Ahurei O Waikato (1998), the last of these three commissions, is immersed in the politics of the Waikato and the land settlements in this area. The work is intended to provide a focal point for reconciliations of the past and the future. It portrays Māori symbols of a tekoteko (figure) and pou whakarae (palisades) in polished bronze.
Lyonel Grant is a brilliant contemporary artist, who draws upon and adapts forms and motifs, often by extracting motifs and parts of historic forms, such as the taurapa, the canoe sternpost, which he reworks in bronze. Drawing on an unparalleled knowledge of historic Maori art, he is in effect a translator, offering reinterpretations with a contemporary accent to global audiences.
Since then, he has continued to exhibit and create commissions, including three significant waka; in 1990 for the artist's iwi Te Arawa (this accompanied the America's Cup challenge to San Diego); a 1996 commission for the foyer of the Sky City casino in Auckland, and a further waka for the 150th Waitangi Day celebrations (this work remains on permanent display on the lakefront in Rotorua). In 2009 he created his third marae and received an Arts Foundation Laureate award. He has also received an Honorary Doctor of Philosophy from Unitec Institute of Technology.
Works by Lyonel Grant are now in prestigious public collections, such as the British Museum, Museum of Anthropology and Archaeology, University of Cambridge, Auckland Art Gallery Toi Takamaki Makarau, Te Papa Tongarewa - Museum of New Zealand amongst others.

Entre 1992 et 1998, Lyonel Grant a réalisé trois grandes commandes pour Electricity Corporation of New Zealand. Ces sculptures reflètent de nombreuses idées essentielles de sa pratique artistique à travers une synthèse des cultures, matériaux et perspectives maoris et européens. La première commande, intitulée Tu Te Rangi Haruru (1992), est une œuvre en bronze et en granite d’un poids imposant et aux dimensions impressionnantes. Sur un niveau, elle évoque la pierre d’ancrage de la pirogue waka ancestrale dont descend le peuple Te Arawa. La deuxième commande, Te Ihingarangi (1992), est inspirée de l’imagerie maorie classique, avec une longue forme en bronze en référence au taurapa (étambot de pirogue). Comme des tatouages sur un corps ou des motifs sur un tissu, la surface de cette œuvre fait office de story-board historique avec cartes de l’époque coloniale, événements marquants du passé et ancêtres vénérés. Te Ahurei O Waikato (1998), la dernière des trois commandes, est enracinée dans la politique du Waikato et les territoires de cette région. L’œuvre a été conçue comme un point de rencontre propice aux réconciliations du passé et à un avenir meilleur. Elle représente des symboles maoris - tekoteko (forme humaine) et pou whakarae (palissades) - en bronze poli.
Lyonel Grant est un brillant artiste contemporain qui s’inspire de formes et de motifs souvent historiques qu’il utilise en totalité ou en partie, à l’instar du taurapa (étambot de pirogue) qu’il retravaille en bronze. Fort de sa connaissance hors pair de l’art maori historique, il fait office de traducteur en proposant des réinterprétations contemporaines aux publics mondiaux.
Depuis, Lyonel Grant continue d’exposer tout en créant des commandes, dont trois importantes pirogues waka : en 1990 pour le peuple Te Arawa dont il est issu (waka qui a accompagné le challenge America’s Cup jusqu’à San Diego), en 1996 pour le grand hall du casino Sky City à Auckland, et la troisième pour le 150e Waitangi Day, fête nationale de Nouvelle-Zélande (cette œuvre est exposée à titre permanent sur les rives du lac à Rotorua). En 2009, il a créé son troisième marae et reçu un Laureate Award de l’Arts Foundation of New Zealand. Il s’est également vu octroyer un honoris causa en philosophie par l’Unitec Institute of Technology.
