This well-preserved drawing appears to be by the same hand as a drawing showing a standing peasant in the Städel Museum, Frankfurt (inv. 3168) and two sheets in Teylers Museum, Haarlem (inv. 75 and 76; see B. Schnackenburg, Adriaen van Ostade. Isack van Ostade. Zeichnungen und Aquarelle, Hamburg, 1981, I, nos. 398/U, 400/U and 401/U, II, pl. 164). Bernard Schnackenburg has suggested that the color in these drawings was probably applied by Cornelis Dusart over sketches by Adriaen van Ostade and this seems also to be the case in the present work.
