In addition to making anatomical studies A regular visitor to the menagerie at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris, Barye depicted the animals he observed in their daily life there in color or black and white, with or without background.Three similar studies of a leopard are at the Musée du Louvre (inv. RF4222, RF 29959) and the Petit Palais (inv. PPD 1053; see I. Leroy-Jay Lemaistre in La Griffe et la dent. Antoine-Louis Barye, sculpteur animalier, exhib. cat., Paris, Musée du Louvre, 1997, nos. 102-104, ill.).
