Lot Essay

While this charming sheet appears to have been drawn in the 18th or 19th century, it recalls natural history drawings by earlier artists such as Georg Flegel (1566-1638) and Joris Hoefnagel (1542-1601) (see F. Koreny, Albrecht Dürer und die Tier- und Pflanzenstudien der Renaissance, exhib. cat., Vienna, Albertina, 1985, nos. 91-93, ill.).
