Lot Essay

This double-sided sheet comes from a group of around two hundred drawings which appeared at auction in 1980 (see Provenance). The figure kneeling on steps shown on both sides of this sheet relates to the figure at lower left in Volterrano's monumental Assumption of the Virgin in the Church of the Santissima Annunziata, Florence. Another study for the same figure is in the Uffizi (inv. 20917F) and further studies are in the Fondazione Roberto Longhi, and the Biblioteca Marucelliana, both Florence. Apart from the Assumption of the Virgin, Volterrano also decorated the Colloredo and Niccolini chapels in the same church.
