Lot Essay

Drawn in Volterrano's characteristic swift technique, this composition is a study for the altarpiece executed in 1677 in Santa Felicita, Florence. A bozzetto for the painting is in the Uffizi, and studies for elements of the composition were sold at Sotheby's, Florence, 10 April 1974, lot 41 and Sotheby's, London, 3 July 1980, lots 44a and b.
