Lot Essay

Lear first travelled to Rome in 1837, and for the next decade would use the city as his base for his travels around Europe. The present drawing, dated 1873, appears to have been worked up later, from a sketch of the 1830s or 1840s, when he travelled extensively through the Roman campagna.
