Lot Essay

Lear arrived in Egypt from Greece on 17 March 1858, sailing into Alexandria. He went on to Cairo overnight on 18 March, and on the morning of 21 March, travelled by boat to Giza with his Albanian manservant Giorgio Cocali. In his diary he records that 'At the Sphinx I drew a little, but then pestering boys annoyed me.'
