Within easy reach of Towne's home in Exeter, Chudleigh is five miles or so south-east of Canonteign along the River Teign. It is close to Ugbrooke Park, the home of Baron Clifford of Chudleigh, for whom Towne had worked in the 1770s. The falls at Chudleigh Rock were a popular beauty spot, and were visited by John Herman Merivale, later the owner of this drawing, in 1805. We are grateful to Timothy Wilcox and Dr Richard Stephens for their help in preparing this catalogue entry.

Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The sheet is fully laid down onto the original washline mount, and hinged into a non-acidic mount. There is are two old vertical creases, one to the centre, and one to the left. There is some slight surface dirt in places and there has typically been some fading to the more delicate pigments, but the sheet reads well and could be hung without further attention.
