Lot Essay

Although not made into a print, this drawing must relate to Gérard’s illustrations for a French edition of the ancient Greek novel by Longus, published in 1800 by Pierre Didot the Elder under the title Les Amours pastorales de Daphnis et Chloé. While most of the illustrations of this luxury edition were designed by Gérard, some were made after Pierre-Paul Prud’hon. Another, sketchier drawing by Gérard related to the publication, also not engraved, is at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (inv. 2012.234).
