Lot Essay

This sheet dates from the late 1770s and appears to relate to a 1777 sketchbook of brown wash figure studies drawn from life. The figures depicted in this sketchbook are probably members of Romney's household, or young working women who he encountered around London, but the poses and groupings he captured were often re-used in his portrait practice.
We are grateful to Alex Kidson for his help in preparing this catalogue entry.
