Alongside other Flemish artists who moved to the Northern Netherlands, De Hondecoeter can be considered one of the pioneers of Dutch landscape painting. The present drawing compares closely to two considered the core of De Hondecoeter’s small drawn œuvre, at the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin (inv. KdZ 11757) and the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (inv. RP-T-1951-11; see M. Schapelhouman, Nederlandse tekeningen omstreeks 1600/ Netherlandish Drawings circa 1600, The Hague, 1987, no. 31, ill.). Another drawing that appears to be by the same hand was offered at the sale Sotheby’s, London, 8 July 2015, lot 22 (as circle of De Hondecoeter).
