Lot Essay

This elegant view of the garden of the Villa Doria Pamphili in Rome is one of forty views in and outside Rome (see G. Marini et al., in Giovanni Volpato: 1735-1803, exhib. cat., Bassano del Grappa, Museo-Biblioteca-Archivio, and Rome, Instituto Nazionale per la Grafica, Gabinetto Disegni e Stampe, 1988, no. 255, ill.) Volpato made this series in collaboration with Abraham-Louis-Rodolphe Ducros who was responsible for the etched lines while the colouring was added by Volpato or by one of the artists from his studio.
