Lot Essay

A pupil of Sebastiano Galeotti and Giovanni Gioseffe dal Sole, Meucci was a prolific painter decorating numerous palazzi and churches in Florence. One of his most important commissions, which he received from Anna Maria Luisa de' Medici, was the decoration of the cupola of the San Lorenzo, Florence. This drawing, dated by Carlotta Lenzi-Iacomelli between 1725 and 1750, does not seem to relate to any known surviving painting or fresco. The sheet is close in style, technique and subject matter to a drawing showing the Goddess Flora in the Palais desBeaux Arts, Lille (see B. Brejon de Lavergnée, Catalogue des Dessins italiens. Collections du Palais des Beaux-Arts de Lille, Paris and Lille, 1997, nos. 429, ill.).
