    Lot Essay


    Callow visited Lugano in 1840, during his first tour of Italy. In order to get there, he travelled through France, and then Switzerland, stopping to draw at Geneva, Lausanne, Arona and Lugano, before travelling to Como. This drawing, exhibited at the Society of Painters in Watercolours in 1849, was probably worked up from sketches made on that trip.
