This drawing is a free copy of a drawing at the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin, which some scholars accept as an early autograph work by Martin Schongauer (inv. KdZ 1015; see F. Koreny, ‘Martin Schongauer as a Draftsman: A Reassessment’, , XXXIV, no. 2, Summer 1996, pp. 142-143, no. 30, fig. 35, as by Schongauer; S. Kemperdick, , Petersberg, 2004, pp. 72-74, as workshop of Schongauer). Making minimal changes, the artist responsible for the present drawing ‘updated’ the fifteenth-century style by replacing the hatching with a carefully modulated wash, and by adapting some details.
