Lot Essay

This drawing appears to be Boucher's model used by the engraver Jean-Baptiste Michel (1748-1804) for his plate titled Le Someil de lAmour (‘The sleep of Cupid’), in which the composition is reversed, and Cupid is seen in a wooded landscape with his his quiver next to him. We are grateful to Alastair Laing for his help in cataloguing this drawing.
