The drawing depicts the battle at the wedding feast of the Lapith King, Pirithous, where the drunken Centaurs tried to abduct the bride and other women. Compositionally and stylistically very similar depictions of the story by the Austrian artist Johann Georg Platzer are in the Louvre (inv. RF 1939 21; see É. Foucart-Walter in Catalogue des peintures britanniques, espagnoles, germaniques, scandinaves et diverses du Musée du Louvre, Paris, 2013, p. 145, ill.) and the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Kassel (inv. GK 647; see B. Schnackenburg, Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister. Gesamtkatalog, Mainz, 1996, I, p. 217, II, pl. 288).
